PSHE & RSE

The personal and social development of each child has a significant role in their ability to learn and achieve.

PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education)

The personal and social development of each child has a significant role in their ability to learn and achieve. The PSHE curriculum supports our children as they prepare to become global citizens and helps them to manage their own health and wellbeing through informed decision-making. Our PSHE learning at Haseltine links with our 3 core values that feed into everything we do:

PSHE is taught directly in class as a standalone subject and through other subjects, for example through English, History, Science and PE. It is reinforced through the daily life of the school community through school assemblies, playground behaviour, healthy eating during break and lunchtimes and Pupil Parliament. We also welcome visitors to the school such as the police and fire service to deliver more specialist sessions for our pupils.

Purpose and Principles

At Haseltine, we believe in providing every pupil with open, honest, accurate and age-appropriate lessons all about relationships. Through the school’s ethos and values, we aim to develop children’s knowledge, skills, opinions, strategies and confidence – enabling them to cope with life and live safely and happily in the modern world.

If young people feel positive and good about themselves, they are more likely to take care of themselves, think positively of other people, and therefore develop non-exploitative, caring relationships. They are also less likely to be exploited by others.

Our PSHE curriculum is inclusive and meets the needs of all children, including those with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND). We also aim to promote gender equality and represent the LGBT+ community through our Relationships curriculum. It is vital that our PSHE curriculum reflects the diverse children and families that we work with. This involves looking at social issues through a critical lens, and considering the history and experiences of our communities. We use data available from government and NHS sources to identify the PSHE topics affecting our local area and to consider how we can best discuss these in a safe, reassuring and age-appropriate way. The resources included in the 1decision scheme of work were also chosen to be representative of our pupils as it is vital that our children see themselves reflected in the videos and images that we use in lessons.

Our PSHE Curriculum

To ensure your children get the very best teaching in these areas we have chosen to use an award-winning resource – 1decision. 1decision is part of Headway Education and has been kitemarked by the PSHE association – the effective governing body for the subject in the UK – as being a quality assured product. Please see www.1decision.co.uk for further details.

RSE (Relationships and Sex Education)

PSHE includes RSE (Relationships and Sex Education). We define Relationships Education as learning about the many strands of relationships and growing up. This includes family relationships, friendships and relationships with peers and adults, healthy and unhealthy relationships, the characteristics of positive relationships, relationships online and the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up.
